Anyone who's driven in Chicago from December through March knows the feeling: Lake effect snow, black ice on the expressway, and the Dan Ryan looking like a parking lot. Your car matters more in winter than any other season.
AWD vs 4WD vs FWD — which do you actually need in Chicago?
AWD (All-Wheel Drive) is the best choice for most Chicago commuters. It automatically distributes power to all four wheels when traction is lost — you don't have to think about it. Great for snow-covered streets.
4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) is typically found on trucks and SUVs. It's better for deep snow and off-road conditions, but uses more fuel and isn't necessary for typical Chicago urban driving.
FWD (Front-Wheel Drive) is fine for most Chicago winters with good winter tires. Many Chicagoans drive FWD vehicles without issues — just invest in quality tires.
Best AWD used SUVs for Chicago winters
- Toyota RAV4 AWD — Reliable, fuel-efficient, excellent resale value. One of Chicago's most popular SUVs for good reason.
- Honda CR-V AWD — Roomy, comfortable, and the turbocharged engine handles cold starts well.
- Subaru Outback / Forester — Subaru's standard AWD system is legendary for winter performance.
- Mazda CX-5 AWD — Sporty feel, excellent safety ratings, and standard AWD available on most trims.
Best budget options under $15,000
- 2017–2019 Toyota RAV4 (FWD or AWD)
- 2016–2018 Honda CR-V
- 2015–2018 Ford Escape AWD
- 2016–2019 Chevrolet Equinox AWD
Don't forget: winter tires make more difference than AWD
This bears repeating: a set of winter tires (like Michelin X-Ice or Bridgestone Blizzak) on a FWD vehicle will outperform a summer-tire AWD vehicle in snow. If budget is tight, put FWD + winter tires over AWD + all-seasons every time.
